It's All America's Fault
And I'll Tell You Why !
It's all very simple, really.
June 09, 2004 (Wednesday)
It's a comforting belief.
If we believe that we're the cause
of all the problems in the world,
then all we have to do
is improve ourselves,
and everything will be all right.
On the other hand,
if we believe that the problems
and troubles of the world
are external to us,
then we have to deal with
those problems and with
whoever or whatever
is the cause of them.
Not so easy.
You see, it's a "feel good" belief.
It's comforting, it feels good
to believe that the world
we live in is neutral, or even good,
to believe that it will never
cause us any problems or do us
any harm that we don't cause ourselves.
It's a friendly world,
and all we have to do is be nice,
and polite and well-mannered,
and appropriate, correct
in our thoughts and actions,
and all will be well.
And that is why we blame America
all the time. It feels good
to think that if America
would just be nicer, more polite,
more sensitive and understanding,
more respectful,
kinder and gentler,
that we would have world peace.
A supporting reason why we
blame America for all the world's
woes, is that America allows us
to do so.
Other countries kill and torture
those who criticize them.
America fights for your right
to say what you will,
even unpleasant, stupid,
ridiculous, or just plain
wrong things.
And that is why
everything is
America's fault.
