With Appreciation
"They Weren't Scary",
The Driver Explained
May 30, 2004 (Sunday)
They were standing there for hours,
they said. Taxi after taxi passed
them by. But when this taxi cruised
down Seventh Ave to Greenwich Village's
Sheridan Square, it stopped.
"For about five minutes
they wouldn't shut up and tell me
where they wanted to go,"
the bemused driver said.
"They seemed to be in a state of shock
after I stopped", he said.
"They just carried on and on
with one another expressing amazement
that a taxi had actually stopped for them.
They thanked me a lot and I took them
to their destination in Brooklyn.
They really talked a lot."
When asked why he stopped for them
and why he thought other drivers didn't,
Dave Scully, the driver, replied,
"Well, I know the area well.
The West Village is full of artists
and intellectuals, and they looked like
they fit it. They didn't look scary to me,
but it can be a dangerous job,
so drivers won't pick up fares
when they're concerned about their safety,
especially at 2 a.m."
Well, Duh.
