The Mental Illness
Of Bill Harris
So what else has happened
in the last three months ?
Well, I was in a McDonalds
in Fairfield one morning,
being my usually friendly
(appropriately friendly)
self.
In line with me were
a woman with her husband
and their young boy,
and the youngster was
an energetic little tyke,
bounding and zipping around
in healthy boyish fashion.
In a friendly and social way,
I quipped, "Quite the
healthy and energetic boy
you have there.
Be careful that the teachers
don't diagnose him with
DDT or ADD or whatever it is."
Turns out she's a special ed
teacher and the boy, indeed,
is DDT or ADD or Dyslexic
or something.
I rolled my eyes
and sighed a sigh
that could be heard
round the world
(but I did this
only in my head,
as I am really quite
a polite and social
and appropriate person,
and, I promised
no more bad behavior -
in this case, I was
avoiding even the
appearance of
bad behavior).
I posed as the friendly,
but ignorant, doubter,
willing to have
his opinion changed.
In a friendly manner,
I asked if she could
please explain to me
why it is
only letters and numbers
that Dyslexics get jumbled,
and not everything else.
She ignored this question
(or maybe she's Dyslexic, too,
and thought I asked
something else)
and responded how brilliant
Dyslexics must be
to be able to figure out
how to learn
to read and write
(while, I suppose,
the letters and numbers
are jumping around
and doing somersaults
like they had DDT or ADD
or something).
Well, that stumped me
(or, at least,
I pretended it did.
See, I TOLD YOU I'm
polite and appropriate.
You didn't believe me,
did you ?).
I shrugged and nodded
in agreement and agreed,
"Yes...Yes, they must
be quite brilliant
to learn to read and write.
Yes, yes indeed."
Heros, no doubt.
(I only THOUGHT that
last line. I was too
polite to SAY it)."
And, indeed,
I was somewhat stunned
by the brilliance of her logic.
I mean, her ability
to make logic do her bidding -
to jump around and do
somersaults just like
the letters and numbers
in a Dyslexic's head !
It brought to mind
an elephant joke
that goes something like this:
JOKER
"Why do elephants
wear red slippers ?"
JOKEE
"I don't know. Why DO
elephants wear red slippers ?"
JOKER
"So they can hide in
cherry trees."
Perplexed pause.
JOKER
"Have you ever seen an elephant
hiding in a cherry tree ?"
JOKEE
"No. No, to be honest, I haven't."
JOKER
"See. It works !"

You see,
this is the kind of
fantasy they make up
in the special ed departments
of education departments
in public schools.
This is how irrational
their thinking is.
It's sheer fantasy,
Disney stuff.
But, the Disney people
KNOW their creations
are fantasy,
and we know it too.
But these special ed people
actually BELIEVE
the fantasies they make up -
and that's a mental illness !
To believe
that fantasies are real
and to call real
and true events fantasies -
that's a mental illness.
People with such beliefs
are not in touch with reality.
Bill Harris is one such
mentally ill person.
He's the head of
the special education dept
at the education dept
at Sac State
(or was until recently),
and I'll tell you more
about his fantasies
and his mental illness
later.
Are you a Critical Thinker ?
