Rush went into rehab after last Friday's program and, Monday through Wednesday this week, KFBK's Tom Sullivan guest-hosted.The congenial Sacramento radio host touts himself as Rush's "best friend", and is clearly the "Felix" to Rush's "Oscar" in this Odd Couple. Timing was key for the monotone reader of stock prices who was at KFBK in Sacramento in 1984 when Rush started out, two years after Dave Scully wrote the Limbaugh script at Sac State. Congenial and agreeable to a fault, Tom is reminiscent of Dukakis on a tank when he tries to express Limbaughesque outrage. "Yeah", "Hey, me too", "That's just what I think", one is likely to hear him say mildly to his callers with all the ferocity of a prop male on a woman's daytime tv show. He's perhaps the most politically correct talk show host of all time, and it's been reported that Tom has never offended anyone on his show. This has been difficult to verify because I have been unable to locate anyone who's stayed awake the whole time. Tom came out strongly against Nazism on one of his shows and you can't help but admire that. It was Tom's view that a university professor who questioned the holocaust should be silenced. There are many who would think that's a strange position for one who's done quite well employed by radio. Radio as a bean a very guud a to heem. When another professor emailed to Tom that the Freedom of Speech is meaningless if you only permit it to those you agree with, Tom just kind of snorted incomprehensibly. His lack of appreciation for the First Amendment may stem from the fact that he's never said anything disagreeable himself. |
Dave Scully is in detox. He's giving up sleeping pills and he says he has Rush and Tom to thank."If Rush can give up the hard stuff, I can stop nibbling on a sleeping pill", Scully says. "Besides, when I listen to the Rush replay, Tom puts me to sleep quicker than you can recall Gray Davis", explained a somewhat lethargic Scully. He explained that there are some side effects, nausea in particular. "I just get sick listening to the guy", he shared. But there's good news, too. "But I usually fall asleep right away when I listen to him, and what's especially great is that he's definitely not habit forming." When asked if he would recommend others listen to Tom's replays at bedtime, Scully replied, "Sure, not to worry at all about getting addicted." |
