like the liberals, and have this
highly refined aesthetic sense
that will be offended by the sight of the oil wells!"

My uncle Bill was a horse's ass
and so was my aunt Jane
and they couldn't get into
any of them elite institutions.
They said they'd never allow no dumb asses like them in
and that they shouldn't even bother to apply.

I mean, when you consider the
financial meltdown that started in 2008,
it seems that every banker and mortgage broker

They just take our money
and give us nothing in return.
It's a crime,
and they seem to be getting away with it.
These were respectable people, we thought,
good, hard working respectable citizens.
It's been an incredible shock to the country
but we all know it's true.
THERE'S SIMPLY NO DENYING IT.

Well, then I suddenly thought about
all these college instructors and professors,
and college deans and presidents,
and politicians and teachers,
and I thought,
"Oh My Goodness !
It's just like with the
big corporate financial scandals.
They just take our money
and give us nothing of value in return.
I mean, lots of schools are so bad
that kids would be better off just not being there.
Staying home or hanging out at the pool hall
would be better than attending some of these schools !
And, yet, there is this
MYTH about teachers,
as if giving them a teaching certificate
makes them some kind of angels or saints.
I mean, it's their fault, really !
The teachers and the teachers' unions
and the education professors
and the politicians
can all try to blame society or something,
but it just doesn't add up.
How can educators blame restrictive laws
that "tie their hands" ?
The politicians who pass those laws
are just doing their bidding
and the bidding of the teachers' unions
and the flaky education professors !
So, these people we respected and trusted
turn out to be betraying us
through incompetence and malfeasance,
JUST LIKE WITH THE FINANCIAL SCANDALS.

Those VERY BAD, FAKE 
liberal women's libbers, educators, and politicians
emanating out of the sacramento hub,
RUINED OUR GRADUATE STUDENT'S LIFE,
deprived him of a fair and equal chance,
blocked all his efforts CONTINUOUSLY,
EVEN IMPRISONED HIM.
It was VERY hard for me to accept.
It was ALWAYS more comfortable for me
to accept the FAKE liberal fascist line
that our graduate student is bad
and that all of them are good.
It SOUNDS reasonable.
But, I realize now
that, when you
compare it to the shocking financial scandals,
when you consider the
psychological phenomenon of GROUPTHINK
which impels people to follow the group
like sheep or lemmings,
when you consider
that the one person who's different,
who THINKS OUT OF THE BOX,
is very often RIGHT
while the many are all wrong,
I realize that our graduate student is right !
It happens all the time !

But it's always uncomfortable to accept.
There's always a backlash.
I mean, it creates this uncomfortable
Cognitive Dissonance in all the groupmembers
who thought they had it all figured out.

IT UPSETS THEIR APPLECART.

That IS an insight !
That's just the way insights work.
The doses of Truth that we administered to you
gradually accumulated
and worked together in your brain.
They reached a Tipping Point
and you "suddenly" had an insight.

But, some parts of Creation
are much, much more wondrous than others.

What Do You Mean ?
Well, The Brazilian Rainforests,
for example.
Teeming With Life !
Colorful Parrots. Noisy, singin' animals.
Zillions of species that
haven't even been discovered and identified.
And the scientists say that every day
when they're done bulldozing
another part of that Rainforest,
that a bunch of them species are made extinct,
forever.
Now up in ANWR, there ain't nothin' but ice.
Oh sure, you can find some life almost anywhere
on the planet I guess,
if you look hard enough with a microscope,
but there ain't nothin' up there
that's gonna pay no notice
to a few ugly ole' oil wells.

So, you see, them thar liberals
are bein' FAKE
when they go a hootin' an a hollerin' an a fussin'
'bout a chunk a ice up there
an stayin' all mum 'bout the Rainforest
where the real horrible stuff
is bein done to The Natural Environment.

Why Don't They Then ?
Oh, couple a reasons really.
First of all,
a lot of them foreign folks
ain't so easy on protesters an' meddlers
like we are here in America
with our First Amendment Rights
and Freedom of Assembly.

But there's another more hidden reason.

The hidden reason
is that liberals are mad because they know
the oil company will make a lot of money
from drilling in ANWR
and they hate the oil company people
and don't want them to get richer.

And our graduate student feels the same way.
He doesn't want that oil company to get rich
from drilling in ANwR.
But he's REAL about it,
not FAKE like the liberals are.
He wants the American citizens
to share that oil wealth.
So, he'd protest drilling in ANWR
FOR THAT REASON,
but not for some FAKE reason
like mythical environmental damage
or some imagined harm to the migrating caribou,
not to just make fiery speeches
or to show off at some demonstration.
The anti-ANWR crowd is FAKE.
They're just building their
liberal credentials
on that issue.

But it's FAKE,
and it destroys the credibility of liberals.
They're gushers themselves,
and it's nonsense they spout.
It's the 13,000,000,000,000,013 th day
of the liberal nonsense spill...and counting.

I Didn't Know That ANWR
Is Just A Barren Chunk Of Ice
Way Up There Above The Artic Circle
Where Nobody Ever Goes Anyway.
Most people don't know that.
It's no Yosemite or Yellowstone

that a person has excellent liberal credentials
because he joined the peace corps
and supports increased funding for welfare
and early childhood education,
or that he has excellent conservative credentials
because he served in the military
and strongly supports the military
and prison building and law enforcement
and tough laws.

Similarly, one can extend the idea
to other areas
and speak of a person's
environmental credentials,
racial credetials,
foreign policy credentials,
domestic credentials,
and so on.

anyway, very briefly,
so you can all see how he developed,
naturally, through his childhood
and adolescence, and into young adulthood,
looking at his experiences, friendships,
ideas, and opinions and feelings
regarding race in the America he lived in.

And then, in the next chapter,
I'll try to reproduce,
in spirit at least,
but as close as our memories will allow,
Dr. King's affectionate and supportive
letter to our graduate student
when our graduate student endured
threats, mockery, scorn, hostility,
and opposition from, seemingly,
every faction of university society.

Dr. King knew a little bit
about that kind of thing, you know.
And that's why the letter was so appropriate.

It's been a long chapter.

First of all, you, the reader,
have to remember two main things

OK Gotta Remember Two Main Things.
Got It.
What Are They ?
First, the country was segregated
in the fifties and sixties.
Everywhere.
Watch tv programs from the 50's.
That's the way it was.

Second, at the end of the sixties
all hell broke loose in the country,
especially in 1968 and 1969
when our graduate student
was 17 years old.
And, the country continued to go crazy
for a couple more years
into 1971 and 1972.

It was about the war.
It was about race.
It came to be about everything.
Just remember that when we get into those years.
I don't want to have to keep reminding you.
Study up on history if you
don't know nothin' about it.
I recommend Dr. Ravitch's "The Troubled Decade",
especially the chapter titled,
"From Berkeley To Kent State".
That chapter right there explains it all real good
so we don't have to be repeatin' it all
here at the end of this chapter
that's already been so long.

OK, Got It.
Read Diane Ravitch.
Right.
So, anyway,
sits at lunch counter with
African American co-worker in 1962,
at the time of the lunch counter sit-ins down South.
That shows that his family and his town
were not racist,
but were "liberal" and advanced for the times.

So, when he goes to high school in Jersey City,
he rides through inner city Newark
twice a day, right where they had the riots
for three or four summers in a row.
On some occasions,
he's the only white person on the bus.
Whenever he goes downtown Newark,
which is fairly regularly,
he mixes with African Americans.

After school, he plays sports
(touch football and basketball)
with the local African Americans
in downtown Jersey City.

One summer he gets a job
at "Exchange Place",
on the docks in downtown Jersey City.
He's 14or 15 working in a warehouse
with African Americans in the summer.
Riots every summer in Newark. JC, often, too.
African American worker buys him rum and coke
frequently at lunch, pulls out a knife,
looks at our graduate student,
"blue eyes ! ain't that sumtin' ?
you're one of 'em !"
(you see, it really WAS a segregated society,
and this worker was amazed to be working with
a blue eyed teenager. That kind of thing
just didn't happen in those days.)

Christmas Holidays junior or senior year
works unloading US Mail trucks 
with an African American teen.
His name was something like "Wittersheim".
Our graduate student remembers
because a dock worker kept
calling out Wittersheim's name
on the loud speaker over and over.
Our graduate student asked Wittersheim
what was going on and Wittersheim
just laughed and said they did that
all the time just to mess with him.
Our graduate student thought
it was interesting that he was able
to just shrug it off.

So that pretty much covers high school.
In the five years after,
he spent a lot of time 
living and working in Manhattan.
He had an African American "big brother"
when he lived on the Lower East Side.
He wrote about that in his blog
about five years ago and
we'll just link to that. (PUT LINK HERE).

Of course, that got him into
karate at Sensei Urban's Chinatown Dojo.
Lots of African Americans in that Dojo.

And then, he drove taxi a couple of times,
driving all around New York City.
He wrote about that in his blog, too,
and we'll link to that. (PUT LINK HERE).

He briefly shared apartments a couple of times
with African Americans on the Lower East Side.

His first year of college he went to
St. Peter's, a jesuit college in Jersey City.
During the next two years,
he attended Rutgers in Newark.
Rented a room across the street.
Lived in downtown Newark.
Socialized a bit with African Americans there.
Was jumped by African Americans
as he exited a building.

Worked in Manhattan,
Midtown at Avco Embassy Pictures
and as a messenger and bicycle messenger
and near NYU at "The Red Apple"
where he worked for an African American.

Hitched across the country
and lived in a Sikh Ashram in Denver
for several months one winter.
An African American male lived there
and was "running a trip" on everyone.
Basically, he was doing everything he could
to disrupt the Ashram,
including playing the racial guilt card.
Our graduate student saw this immediately
as a sophisticated cosmopolitan New yorker,
and rejected the drama,
He was frowned on as a "racist".
Yogi Bhajan came to the ashram,
saw what our graduate student saw,
and ejected the African American,
vindicating our graduate student,
but leaving him contemptuous and wary
of white liberals.

Now, during this five year period
after high school
our graduate student's racial attitude
developed from an innocently benign
feeling of goodwill toward African Americans,
with a heaping dose of culturally imposed,
and jesuit imposed, guilt feelings
for having been born a white man
to anger at the seemingly
ever present unprovoked hostility
of African Americans.

His African American "big brother"
tried to wise him up
when he was living on the Lower East Side,
his mind full of Thoreau, Ghandi, and MLK.
"David", he said, "when a group of blacks
see a white boy get beat up, they're happy.
It's not like they told you in school."

It took our graduate student
several years to come around
to what his big brother was trying to tell him.
Several years after the woodstock festival,
he lived in and around Woodstock,
trying to see what that was all about.
He befriended a black fellow there
and one day they went to New York together.
Our graduate student was jumped
by about five hispanic teens.
He fought them off,
but his heavy jacket
was torn to shreds by their knife or knives.
They only attacked our graduate student,
not his African American friend.
There was an expression in those decades
that a liberal was defined as
"someone who hasn't been mugged yet."
Our graduate student was fed up.
Fed up with unprovoked attacks
and hostility from African Americans
and other "people of color".
He was enraged at the
hippie, liberal, radical counter culture.
Intellectually, he could see
that radicalism was horse shit.
